The nature of a neon sign is to capture the gaze and to demand attention. The sentence “A ME GLI OCCHI” [eyes on me] is stated as an imperative, promising but also vaguely menacing. It is the traditional sentence that starts something magical: while pronouncing it to their audience, the magicians set the rules for the magic about to happen. But it is also a deception: the audience focuses on the wrong detail, and the hidden trick takes place. This time, though, the trick is not even performed, disappointing any expectation.
